Country Fireplace Renovation
The 2-storey stone fireplace in this 40 year old country home is an integral part of the main living spaces. As such, a major overhaul was needed to bring it up to date.
The plan was to install a new 3-sided gas (propane) insert to replace the huge copper-clad wood-burning fireplace on the main floor.
The first step was to remove all the old stone boulders from the entire structure to see what we were dealing with. As it turned out, the existing fireplace could not simply be removed without proper support. Cue the structural engineer!
The structural drawings eventually resulted in custom-fabricated metal reinforcements. Notice that the fireplace has been stripped of its hammered copper sheathing - ready to be removed!
Out with old and in with the new....
Finally the old copper-clad wood-burning fireplace is gone and has been replaced with a sleek new gas fireplace.
The finished fireplace with natural stone (full-bed-thickness tiger-striped Eramosa) quarried in Ontario.
